The robust Google Earth alternative has multiple viewing modes, which can be used to view the Earth as not only a 3D globe, but also highlight its topographical features, street views, and even temperature and precipitation data. This is further enhanced by information like photos, real-time traffic updates, and online/offline address search. In fact, Marble also has routing and turn-by-turn navigation (both online and offline) features. The application itself is fairly lightweight, as it ships without any extra data-sets. However, the same can be easily fetched via in-app downloads. There are even data-sets that let you view virtual models of moon and other planets, and follow satellites and space stations orbits, which are updated in real-time. Add to it, there are many useful tools like time simulation, bookmarks etc., that makes Marble even better. Platform Availability: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android Price: Free. Earth Browser It might not be the fanciest looking of the bunch, but Earth Browser is a pretty good virtual globe application, with quite some features. Essentially, it is a virtual Earth simulation that lets you check out real-time weather conditions and seven day forecasts (with data sourced from ) for thousands of worldwide locations. Not only that, Earth Browser can display useful information about a whole range of natural phenomena, including live earthquakes, hurricanes, and even volcanoes. This makes it great not just for educational uses, but also for weather watching. Apart from all this, Earth Browser can also visualize data from artificial satellites such as the Hubble telescope, and the International Space Station. And there’s a lot more, including information sourced from dynamic webcams, Doppler radars, and polar auroras. There’s a light in-browser variant too that you can use. Platform Availability: Windows, Mac OS X Price: $19.95, Free trial mode available 4. Flash Earth If all you need is a simple solution that lets you view satellite imagery of the Earth (or any location on it), the browser based Flash Earth might just be worth considering. It’s an online flash tool that you can use to view satellite images of Earth, using multiple sources like NASA, Bing Maps, and ArcGIS. For the NASA sourced images, you can specify any custom date (with individual day, month and year). The tool also provides search functionality for viewing images corresponding to any location on Earth, which can be shared via direct links. How cool is that?

Vegas Movie Studio is the consumer-level counterpart to Vegas Pro. Both applications started life as Sony products and now are part of the Magix collection of creative software. Though trailing the field in usability during their Sony days, both apps are getting refreshed interfaces and features under the auspices of Magix. The latest changes in Vegas include a simplified and customizable interface, support for HEVC H.265 content, improved 4K and hardware acceleration, and an instant freeze-frame effect. Getting Started With Vegas Movie Studio Vegas Movie Studio is available at three levels: $49.99 gets you the base edition, and for $79.99 you get Platinum (reviewed here), which adds Blu-ray authoring, NewBlueFX transitions, 3D editing, color matching, stabilization, color correction, time stretching, picture-in-picture, and plug-in support. The $139.99 Movie Studio Suite adds a passel of third-party video and audio effects. Platinum is the sweet spot, with enough tools to have serious fun and creativity with your media. There is a 30-day free trial, so you needn't pay until you're sure Vegas is for you. The software runs on 64-bit versions of Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10, with 4GB RAM recommended. You first download a small installer app that gives you a choice of components to download, such as the NewBlue effects and the separate Music Maker program. The video editor tool takes up 819MB of disk space right after installation, which isn't excessive. You get a choice of five interface languages: English, French, German, Polish, and Spanish. I tested the software on a 4K-display-equipped running 64-bit Windows 10 Home with 16GB of RAM, a quad-core Intel Core i7-6700T CPU, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphics card. The Vegas Interface Vegas Movie Studio's interface it is much improved, no longer dizzying the onlooker with its former miasma of buttons and menus. Instead, it offers a modern-looking dark interface with just a modicum of buttons. The trimming may have gone too far; sometimes I found myself looking for a button that's common in most other programs, only to discover it had been removed. There are, for example, small buttons below the timeline, but none above, which most programs have for the major trimming options, audio, effects, and so on. Even Final Cut Pro offers these. Instead, to add an effect or transition (apart from automatic crossfades), you have to open what looks like a File Explorer list. The new Quick Start panel at top left helps in creating this impression, with its simple step-numbered choices of Add Video and Audio, Add Text and Graphics, Create Transitions, Add Video Effects, and Make Movie. My fresh installation was preloaded with a sample project, which is another helpful touch for getting started. But the Quick Start window is somewhat of a tack-on; other programs such as and others have entire modes (also called tabs or workspaces) that take you through the steps of importing, editing, outputting, and more. A new Add Media button makes assembly clearer. There's an option to save custom window Layouts, but there's not much guidance for using it. There's no touch-screen-friendly option, which used to be a part of the program's Simple mode. Even the pro-level Adobe Premiere Pro offers a touch interface option. I am happy to see that Vegas adapts to high-DPI displays, however, showing appropriately sized controls rather than the tiny controls that unoptimized programs such as display. Click to expand. Optenni Lab is a software tool for the synthesis and optimization of matching circuits for multiband, broadband, multi-antenna and tunable antenna systems. Optenni Lab can also be used for demanding radio-frequency amplifier matching problems. “Matching circuits are key and widely used in the RF chain, where they can have a big impact on the performance of any wireless device, including its range and battery life. Design and Matching of a 60 GHz Printed Antenna using NI AWR Software and AWR Connected for Optenni. Designing and tuning matching circuits can be a tedious task and Optenni Lab offers RF and antenna engineers an intuitive, fast, and easy-to-use matching circuit synthesis and optimization software,” said Dr. Jordi Soler, Director of Global Business Development, Electromagnetic Solutions at Altair. “Our fruitful collaboration with Optenni started many years ago, where we have been and still are selling Optenni Lab as a separate tool and licensing to complement FEKO®. Today, we are taking an important step forward by having Optenni Lab join the APA since this will permit Altair customers to run Optenni Lab using HyperWorks Units with no additional licenses required. Altair customers from multiple industries will now be able to leverage this new addition, including consumer electronics and IoT companies, automotive, aerospace, defense, electronics and communications, among other verticals. There is a two-way link between FEKO and Optenni Lab. Customers use FEKO to simulate the impedance data for the unmatched antenna, which is transferred to Optenni Lab to synthesize the optimal matching circuit, considering multiple topologies and using realistic library models from several component vendors. Once the matching circuit is designed, it is transferred back to FEKO and added into the model. Matching circuits for antennas are widely used but Optenni is also useful to design matching circuits for low-noise and power amplifiers and for multiplexer design.” Optenni Lab optimizes matching circuits to maximize the total efficiency of broadband and multiband antennas, taking into account component losses and antenna radiation efficiency. The software also provides matching circuits that optimize the total efficiency in multi-antenna systems, taking antenna coupling/isolation into account. Multiport capabilities are used to maximize the end-to-end transfer of energy in Bluetooth, RFID, NFC and wireless charging applications. Optenni Lab features unique capabilities specifically engineered for designing and optimizing tunable and switchable matching circuits providing optimal values for both fixed and tunable matching components so that the best efficiency is obtained on all the desired operation bands. In designing matching circuits for low-noise amplifiers and power amplifiers, the user can specify the optimal target impedances for best noise, power, or efficiency performance – including the impedances at harmonic frequencies. Optenni Lab also speeds up the design of quadplexers and higher N-plexers in modern multiband front-end modules for mobile devices. “Optenni Ltd. Has collaborated for many years with the FEKO development and sales teams to support and sell an easy-to-use complete solution for matching circuit design for antenna applications,” said Jussi Rahola, Optenni CEO. “We are happy to join the Altair Partner Alliance as we see it as a strategic partnership to boost our sales to large international companies through the Altair sales network.” Optenni Lab is typically used in the design of handheld device antenna systems – smartphones, tablets etc. – and in the automotive industry for radio transceiver unit’s antenna design. The antennas are often integrated into the device cover or printed circuit board, and the geometry and ground planes are thus usually restricted by the mechanical design. In an efficient design flow, the antenna geometry is optimized together with the matching circuit, using electromagnetic (EM) simulator and Optenni Lab cooperatively. Before implementing the matching circuit, one can easily adjust the possible EM simulation inaccuracies by carrying out a prototype measurement and using the measured data in the matching circuit synthesis. This way one can alleviate the EM modeling accuracy requirement and adapt to last-minute changes in device mechanics, materials etc. Which is better for photoshop on mac 32 or 64 gb ram. It also defaults to an amount of RAM that's a good starting point for most users under most conditions. If you have a large amount of RAM (3GB or more), you can try increasing that percentage, but if you go too far, you'll hear the hard disk start to thrash whenever the operating system or another application needs to grab some RAM. |
